CottagesNew cottages are critical. Forty percent of our girls live in a 1960s dorm-like residence. It was built when sleeping rooms opened from long hallways, and community space was added as an afterthought. According to Lloyd Meyer, the project architect from Leo A. Daly, "The dormitory does not lend itself to a therapeutic environment."
Over time, these original dorm rooms have been partitioned. Each room now provides two separate bedrooms for four girls. For now, twelve girls share one bathroom. The community space is dingy. The condition of these rooms provides a two-class system of living for 24 residents. The Village's 36 other beds are in well-lit cottages that provide private bedrooms, multiple bathrooms and cozy community space.
The new cottages will be adjacent to the Wellness Center and the school program. They will not add new beds; existing beds will be relocated to the new cottages. Give to the Uta Halee Wellness Campaign Back to the Campaign page |
